The Demotix Blog

Today we're congratulating Ahmed Deeb, who's been contributing to Demotix since June of last year. We've just learned that he's taken third place in the photojournalism category of the Thomson Foundation's Inquirer Awards for 2011, for a story he uploaded in October.

Best of Photojournalism 2012 from the NPPA

Another week, another photojournalism award for you to apply for! Thanks this time to Kevin Downs for the tip.

Yesterday I asked for feedback on our ideas for a revamped Profile Page for Demotix users.

We realise that the current profile page isn't really up to scratch or professional looking - so we want to create a profile page for you that can really be the home for your photography on the web.

There are a number of common aims that have influenced what we've included in all the new designs:

Demotix is thrilled to announce the release of our new app for iPhone!

Speed is everything. The app, now available in the App Store, allows reporters to upload news directly from their phone as the story breaks around them.

Humanitarian journalism grant opportunity

We've just found out about the existence of a new grant that's been set up to help journalists with exciting projects along their way.

Each grant is just $500 (US) but it might be the final push you need to reach your funding target - or the incentive you need to find the rest of your funding!

Shooting in low light without using flash

Why shoot without flash?

It just looks better! Demotix has had feedback from clients saying that the likelihood of your night-time images selling is much higher if you do away with the harsh, unnatural light from the flash.

Demotix could soon be blocked in the USA

UPDATE: Today, the 18th January 2012, some of the world's biggest websites, including Wikipedia, have blacked themselves out in protest against the proposed legislation. It looks like the House of Representatives has abandoned SOPA for the moment, but PIPA is still alive in the Senate. We hope US Demotix users will agree with us that this still represents a threat to free speech online.

We don’t often express political views here on the Demotix blog, so you know that when we do it must be important. We’re not on anyone’s side, except for yours - the people who benefit from free speech online.

That value, though, is under threat - and not from the usual suspects.
